In short: The choice between a ready-made platform and custom development is made based on working scenarios: who will change prices, take orders and develop the site, and how. A ready-made foundation saves time on standard tasks. Custom development is justified where business rules do not fit into standard capabilities. The most complex mandatory scenario is worth testing before ordering.
A website builder and a custom-built site should be compared by working scenarios: taking orders, updating materials and further development. The client does not have to choose a programming language. It is much more useful to understand the limitations of a ready-made platform and the maintenance obligations of a custom solution.
Start with an ordinary working day
Write down which actions will be repeated after launch. An employee changes a price, adds a service, processes an inquiry or exports orders. For each action, define who does it and where the data comes from. Such a list will show the limitations of the future solution better than a list of desired features.
A hypothetical company with a small set of services may be fine with standard pages and a form. But if the price of each product depends on the client’s contract, several levels of approval and document exchange are needed, and the platform will have to be checked more thoroughly. A nice example of a home page proves nothing about these processes.
What a ready-made foundation gives you
A website builder or content management system provides existing tools: an editor, page templates and standard settings. This lets you use accumulated capabilities instead of building every mechanism from scratch. At the same time, the project still requires preparing materials and configuring it for the company.
Before choosing, check:
- the plan’s limitations;
- the number of users;
- payment terms;
- the availability of the connections you need.
Do not rely only on a demo screen. Ask to be shown editing a service, changing the catalog and receiving an inquiry in the version you plan to use.
The word “ready-made” does not mean the same degree of dependence. Different solutions differ in hosting rules, data access and migration options. Specific terms should be checked with the chosen provider at the time of ordering.
When custom logic is justified
Custom development is needed where business rules fit poorly into standard capabilities. For example, a partner sees only their own properties, a manager approves an order under certain conditions, and documents depend on the contract status. Building such a process can be the central task of the project.
But custom development does not remove budget and time constraints. A non-standard mechanism requires a description of the rules, testing of exceptions and further maintenance. A simple action on the screen sometimes hides complex responsibility for data and access.
Compare changes and portability
Find out who will maintain the site and whether another contractor will be able to continue the work. You need access credentials, a description of the main settings and an understanding of where the data is stored. For a ready-made platform, export rules matter; for a custom solution, so does the set of materials handed over. What to receive at handover is listed in the website acceptance checklist.
Consider a hypothetical change of contractor. A new specialist needs to change a form and add a section. What will they need to get from the previous team? If the answer comes down to one employee’s personal login, the risk lies in how the work is organized, regardless of the technology.
Separately estimate the cost of ownership: subscriptions, hosting, updates and future changes. A low price for the first stage does not show the costs over the whole period of use. At the same time, custom development does not guarantee savings on maintenance.
Check the contentious points before ordering
Ask for a demonstration of the most complex mandatory scenario. You do not need to build an entire product: it is enough to confirm that the required permissions, data exchange or calculation are available in the chosen approach. If uncertainty remains, set it aside as a separate verification stage.
It is convenient to compare proposals against the same requirements:
- the customer’s action;
- the employee’s work;
- content updates;
- data migration;
- support.
How to bring different estimates down to these is covered in the article “How to compare website development estimates”.
For a simple task, choose the solution with fewer obligations. For a complex one, do not buy a familiar platform at the cost of constant manual work.
At trike_dev, a task can start with a suitable demo from the catalog (in Russian). Describe the main scenario and the business constraints: then the foundation will be chosen to fit the task, and the client will not have to get into the technology.
Частые вопросы ### Can a good commercial website be built on a ready-made platform?
Yes, if its capabilities cover the task. Quality depends not only on the foundation but also on the structure, content, configuration and testing.
Is custom development needed just for an unusual look?
Not always. It is worth first checking whether the intended scenario can be implemented with the tools of a suitable platform. Custom development should have a clear advantage for the business.
