In short: The structure of a clinic website is built on the links “specialty, service, doctor, branch, booking”. A person can land on any page, so each one needs context, a next step and a way to clarify information. The structure can be checked before content is added: walk through real routes on a phone.
The structure of a clinic website should help a person choose a service, a doctor and the next step from any entry page. So the structure should not rely on the visitor having seen the home page. On every important page a person needs context, a suitable next step and a way to clarify information. For a clinic, this means designing the links between sections. A list of menu items is not enough.
Start with the different ways into the site
Hypothetical visitors arrive with different tasks:
- one has already chosen a specialist and wants to know where they see patients;
- another knows the name of the service but has not yet chosen a doctor;
- a third is looking for the nearest branch.
If everyone is shown a single button with a generic form, an employee will have to find out again the details the visitor has already looked at.
Describe these routes before drawing the menu. For each one, define the starting page, the necessary information and the action. This approach helps you notice gaps: for example, a doctor is listed on the specialty page, but their profile does not explain which branch they work at.
The home page is there to introduce the clinic and lead to the main sections. It should not become the only place with the address, contacts or terms for making an inquiry. This information should be available where the corresponding questions arise.
Separate the specialty from the specific service
A specialty groups several services and helps people find their way around the clinic’s offer. A specific service answers a narrower question: what exactly is available, what it is called in the price list, where it is performed and how to clarify the terms.
It is not necessary to create a separate page for every line of the internal price list. If several items cannot be clearly described separately, first discuss grouping with the responsible specialist at the clinic. The structure should reflect an offer that is understandable to the visitor and real differences. There is no need to mechanically repeat the clinic’s working spreadsheet.
The description of medical content and terms is checked by the clinic. The contractor can organize the presentation and navigation but should not invent indications, preparation instructions or promises of results on their own.
Link doctors, services and branches
A doctor’s profile can contain verified information about the specialist, their areas of work, where they see patients and how to make an inquiry. From it, the visitor should be able to go to related services. From a service page, a path back to the available specialists is useful.
With several branches, the address becomes part of the choice. You should not show a generic call to book if the service is available only in one location. It is better to keep the selected branch when moving to the form or widget and show it before submission.
A single data record matters for staff. If a branch’s phone number changes, it is preferable to correct it in one source. When ordering the website, clarify which information is linked automatically and which will have to be updated manually. This affects future errors and effort.
Make booking a continuation of the choice
The button should explain the action: send a request, contact the front desk or choose a time. These scenarios cannot be named the same way if the result differs.
In a hypothetical example, the visitor has chosen a service and a doctor. If the form again asks them to list everything manually in a comment, the website loses the context it has already received. It is better to pass on the selected details and let the person check them. If the system cannot guarantee the time, after submission it should say that an employee will confirm it.
How to choose between a form, a widget and clinic management system integration is covered in the article “Online booking for a clinic”.
You also need a fallback: a phone number, a clear contact or a way to leave a request when the schedule is temporarily unavailable. It is worth testing this separately from the successful scenario.
How to check the structure before content is added
Take several of the clinic’s real offers and go through them on a phone without hints from the developer. Check three routes:
- find a service via a specialty;
- find a doctor by name;
- find a branch by address.
Then try changing the choice before making an inquiry. Note the places where you had to go back to the home page or guess what a button means.
To prepare the structure, collect a list of services, doctors and branches with their links. Based on this data you can discuss the trike_dev solution for clinics and define the scope of the first release without unnecessary sections.
Частые вопросы ### Do you need to build a large website right away?
No, if the clinic is launching one specialty and the scope of the offer is limited. But even a small version should contain a coherent path from information to inquiry.
Does each branch need its own page?
It is useful when locations differ in services, doctors, contacts or visiting conditions.
