An estimate for website development is useful for selecting a contractor if it reveals the scope of work, assumptions, and results of each stage. One provider expects ready-made texts; another includes their preparation; the third counts only design. Before making a choice, normalize the proposals into a single understandable purchase.
First, Eliminate Differences in the Initial Task
Gather a short general project description and send it to all participants in the comparison. It must include:
- pages;
- main visitor actions;
- material readiness;
- external integrations;
- launch requirements.
Ask them to explicitly mark what is excluded from the proposal.
If discussions took place separately, providers may have heard different requests. An updated common document aligns contractor awareness, allowing you to compare the work itself. The result of clarifications is best obtained in writing within the proposals themselves.
Translate Work Names into Results
The line item "design" requires clarification: which pages, how many variants, what form states, and how the mobile screen is handled. The line item "development" must explain what will work and what an employee can manage. This line's composition heavily depends on the website foundation; more details are in the article Ready Platform or Custom Website Development.
There is no need to request details for every button. For comparison, results that can be verified are sufficient:
- created and agreed-upon page types;
- transferred a specified amount of content;
- submissions go to the required system;
- editor is available to the client.
Compare content separately. In one case, "twenty pages" means independent development of twenty services; in another, it is the transfer of twenty ready-made texts by template. These options cannot be considered equal based solely on the number of URLs.
Analyze a Hypothetical Example of Differences
Imagine two hypothetical estimates, unrelated to specific company prices.
- Option A: 80,000 RUB, assembly using ready-made texts.
- Option B: 120,000 RUB, assembly, content preparation, and transfer of old URLs.
The 40,000 RUB difference tells you nothing about value until it is clear who will perform the missing work in Option A. If the company can qualitatively prepare materials internally, the first option may be suitable. If external assistance is required, its cost and timelines must be added to the comparison.
A hypothetical calculation is not for haggling over someone else's price. It demonstrates the principle: you should evaluate the total result and your own team's involvement. For each option, it is useful to record how many hours and decisions will be required from the client's employees.
Find Obligations Beyond Launch
Clarify costs for hosting, subscriptions, licenses, and regular updates. Check who owns the accounts and what is handed over after payment. Sometimes a proposal looks short because important future expenses are listed as separate services. Regular payments are discussed in detail in the article Website Expenses After Launch.
The word "support" also requires clarification. Fixing an error in completed work, adding a new page, and urgent recovery from an external failure may be governed by different conditions. Ask about availability hours, contact methods, and liability boundaries.
Check the grounds for additional payments. Increasing the catalog, adding a new feature, and changing the approved structure are different changes. It is desirable to understand in advance how they are evaluated and agreed upon, so that a promise of a fixed sum does not create false expectations.
Ask Contractors the Same Questions
Ask each to go through one customer scenario and one employee scenario. For example, a visitor requests a product with specifications, a manager receives the application composition, and an editor changes the description. Then discuss what happens if an external system is unavailable. The same scenarios will later be useful during website acceptance.
Choose a combination of appropriate scope, clear conditions, and the ability to explain the solution.
To discuss a project with trike_dev, describe the required result and mandatory conditions. When choosing a contractor, compare obligations: a commercial presentation says nothing about them.
Частые вопросы ### Can I choose based on the total sum?
Only after normalizing the scope. A cheaper proposal may be entirely suitable if a limited result covers the task. A high price also does not prove quality without clear liability and verification.
Is it necessary to request an hourly breakdown?
It may help with an open volume, but it does not replace the result and readiness criteria. An estimate with a hundred hours without clear boundaries sometimes explains less than several well-described stages.
